Oil on canvas, late 19th century, signed lower right P. Grivolas: Pierre Grivolas 1824 - 1906.
Grivolas revealed such talent that his parents enrolled him in the city's drawing classes. In 1843, he won the first prize of the Calvet legacy, which allowed him to continue his studies in Paris. A student at the Beaux-Arts, he met and frequented Dominique Ingres, Eugène Delacroix and Hippolyte Flandrin. He became director of the Avignon School of Fine Arts from 1878 to 1906 and trained many painters who formed with him the New School of Avignon, the third of the name.
