"Hermaphrodite - Bronze By Sergio Castillo Mandiola (chile 1925 - 2010) #682"
Sergio Castillo Mandiola (Santiago, 1925 - 2010) He began studying architecture in 1942, but dropped out after two years with the idea of pursuing an artistic career. His plans came to fruition in 1948, when he traveled to Europe and entered the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Jullian in Paris, where he studied painting and drawing. Upon his return to Chile in 1954, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts of the University of Chile, determined to become a sculptor. He then continued his studies at the Art Students League (1956) in New York. In 1967, he was a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Santiago, both in the United States and in Berkeley. Then in 1975-85, he taught metal sculpture at the Boston Art Institute. His works, intended for public spaces, are based on rhythm, tension, direction and dynamism. He also practices figuration in his smaller works, privileging the female body, whose volume "is worked with erotic characteristics, emphasizing with great emphasis the theme of sexuality". He is the author of the first abstract sculpture placed in a public place in Chile, About twenty international awards, and about 25 personal exhibitions (usa chili paris...)
