Champlevé is an ancient technique of decoration on enamel, in which alveoli or cavities are dug into the surface of a metal object and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then baked until the enamel melts and once cooled, sanded and polished. The uncarved parts of the original surface remain visible as the contour of the enamel drawings.
The inkwell is equipped with a lid with a small palm leaf-shaped knob and an internal glass for ink.
