This scene of the Passion of Christ, reported by the canonical Gospels, describes the confrontation of the crowned Christ with soldiers and the people who mock him and his title of king of the Jews. Here it is the executioners who are ridiculed by their attitudes and the grotesqueness of their faces. Frans Francken the Younger or Frans Francken II was born in Antwerp in 1581 and died in the same city on May 6, 1642. He is the best known and most prolific member of the Francken family.
