"Espoliné Indian Cashmere Shawl Circa 1840"
Circa 1840 India for export to France Precious square cashmere shawl from India in an eight-color tapestry stitch weave with remarkable finesse. This type of shawl is called Rumal in India. Virtuoso design with a central black reserve and palms in spandrels darting out in interlacing with very strong polychromy. Embroidered signatures of the Indian craftsman in the center. The large borders are in an architectural design of alternating ogive-shaped boxes. On two ends, embroidered and fringed harlequin borders. These so-called rich shawls were part of wedding baskets in France. They adorned the dresses of elegant ladies at the end of the Louis-Philippe period. A few rare tiny moth holes that do not compromise the stability and good resistance of this shawl. No defects. Very good condition of color and conservation. Dimensions: 184 cm x 184 cm.
