"Jean-jean Cornu. Oil On Canvas "small Pose At The Water's Edge" 100.8 X 62.5 Cm"
Jean-Jean Cornu. Oil on canvas "small pose at the water's edge" signed and dated lower right JJ Cornu. 74. French school. 100.8 X 62.5 cm. Jean-Jean Cornu (1819-1876) was the assistant of Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) in Ornans (Franche-Comté) between 1872 and 1873. Our painting, designed in 1874, is a brilliant example of the technique that Cornu developed in the studio of the Master of Ornans. The serifs delicately applied to the canvas to reproduce the foliage of the trees, their reflections in the water as well as the stony shore, prove that Cornu has learned Courbet's lessons. The mastery of light is a challenge for all painters on all continents and in all eras. In 1874, the year our painting was made, the Impressionists excelled in this art. If Courbet and Cornu were not among them, they certainly showed the way to their juniors. Unframed. A touch-up in a tree on the far left. Good condition.
