Biography: René Jaudon (1884-1966)
René Jaudon was born on rue des Teinturiers in Marjevols, in Lozère, with atrophy of his legs. His parents, originally from Chirac, moved to this village to better adapt their accommodation to his disability. He completed his schooling with the Brothers of the Sacré-Cœur. In 1900, the family moved to Chalon-sur-Saône where René first worked at the discount counter before turning to the arts.
He became an apprentice designer-lithographer at the Moret printing company, then continued his training at the Académie Julian in Paris and at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1908. He worked as a designer-lithographer for the Plummereau and Hachette printing companies. In 1910, he joined the Paris School of Fine Arts and prepared for the Prix de Rome, but failed to pass the final test.
After the First World War, René returned to the School of Fine Arts and stayed at the Casa de Velázquez. Back in France, he married Berthe Dubois, daughter of a sculptor, in 1922.
René Jaudon became an arts teacher in 1922. In 1926, he co-founded an academy at 25 passage d'Enfer, in Paris, where he taught lithography, engraving and painting. His classes attracted up to 200 students in 1939. In 1938, he was appointed professor of lithography at the École des beaux-arts in Paris, where he replaced Louis Huvey.
During the Second World War, despite a temporary interruption, he continued his lessons. In 1949, he stopped teaching in his private academy for health reasons, entrusting the direction to Robert Baudry, his massier. The school took the name “Drawing and Decorative Arts Workshop” and operated until 1986.
René Jaudon, who resided in Oise, was promoted to Commander of the Academic Palms in 1950. He retired in 1959 and died suddenly on August 24, 1966 in Puiseux-en-Bray, after spending time with his sister in La Canourgue.
This timeless work, ideal for illuminating a living room or living space, will bring a touch of elegance and escape to your interior.
