The atmosphere is cloudy, the sun barely breaks through the clouds. The position lights of the ships add touches of color in the gray and beige monochrome.
The work is signed and dated (1900) lower right.
The work is in good condition, clean. There are some minor foxing, and a thin darker band on the right side of the work, due to an earlier framing. The work is placed under glass, in an old gilded frame, in fair condition.
The artist
This watercolor was made by Louis Etienne Timmermans, Belgian painter. Born in 1846 in Brussels, he studied at the academy of this city then at the Beaux-Arts of Paris where he became a professor. He exhibited Breton, Norman and Dutch seascapes at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, obtaining an honorable mention in 1904. Specializing in seascapes and port themes, he used many details to animate his landscapes. He worked mainly in the ports of the Channel and the North Sea and also traveled around Brittany to renew his sources of inspiration.
