EXHIBITION: Paris, Galerie Johann Naldi, Paintings and Sculptures, January 31 to February 15, 2014, no. 4 (this work illustrated).
According to Stephen Bann, the present work "could be dated to the early 1820s. The old man represented in the second drawing held by the Orléans museum could be the same model as the old bearded man that Paul Delaroche presents here peacefully seated with his satchel. Moreover, the signature of our painting, with its graceful flourishes and a capital R in "Delaroche" is very similar to that of the first drawing from Orléans. It is also reasonable to think that the artist remembered our painting when, in the last watercolour of the studies for an episode of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions, he represented the author resting near a church."
