Object description :

"Silver And Copper Inlaid Metal Box, Syrian Work, 19th Century"
Superb Syrian box, probably dating from the 19th century, is a fine example of the exceptional know-how of Levantine craftsmen in the art of metal marquetry. Made of brass or copper, it is finely inlaid with silver and gilded copper, a technique prized in Syria, particularly in Damascus and Aleppo, for the manufacture of art and prestige objects. The lid is decorated with a tughra (Ottoman calligraphic monogram), finely chiseled and gilded, surrounded by a stylized floral decoration with arabesque influences. The sides of the box are richly decorated with calligraphic friezes in Arabic, highlighted by an interlacing of plant and geometric motifs inspired by Islamic art. The box opens thanks to a system of finely crafted hinges, revealing a sober interior in patinated metal. This object, both utilitarian and decorative, was probably intended to store documents, jewelry or other precious objects. Of great refinement, this box embodies the elegance of oriental decorative arts and bears witness to the Ottoman influence in 19th century Syrian craftsmanship.
