Putto giving offerings to a child Venus and her attendants.
In the lush vegetation of the left foreground, a kneeling putto reveals the contents of a casket containing jewels, fabrics and ointments. Behind him in the background, another putto rides a dromedary. In front of him, leaning on a blue silk cushion, is a representation of Venus as a child. One putto presents her reflection in a mirror, another crowns her with a wreath of roses, and a third orants behind her. At her feet are two doves. In the right foreground, incense smoke billows from a perfume burner.
The format of our painting suggests that it could have been a door overlay. This type of subject, with divinities or allegories represented in the form of putti, was very much in vogue at the time, notably among his contemporaries Charles Joseph Natoire (1700-1777) and Charles André van Loo (1705-1765).
Oil on canvas, on its original stretcher, signed “F.Boucher” and dated “1741” lower left.
Slight lacks in the paint layer and repainted edges on the sides.
