Mystic and naturalist, Charles Lacoste is an artist from the Bordeaux region. His mother, from a family of planters in Haiti, taught him Creole culture, both exotic and enchanting. From the age of six, he was overwhelmed by the magical aspects of light, and became fully aware of the beauty of nature. Self-taught, he painted outdoors, observing and magnifying the surrounding elements. He became friends with Francis Jammes, a future poet, and Gabriel Frizeau, a future collector, who encouraged him in his artistic path. Several trips to London allowed him to perfect his atmospheric visions, before settling in Paris, and experiencing growing success. A first monographic exhibition was organized by the Salon des Cent in 1898. Outside of any movement, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne (which he co-founded in 1903), and the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels and the Salon de la Toison d'Or in Moscow.
"It is spiritually that I experienced my work: in doing it I felt better that the splendor of this world is the reflection of the glory of God" Approaching nature as the materialization of mystical elements, the representation of misty and amazed atmospheres allows the artist to reach a certain idea of grace. Metaphysically, Charles Lacoste's painting is the culmination of a profound contemplation, where light is perceived as an apparition. In search of the eternal, the skies at the end of the day fully illustrate the inescapable mystery of nature.
