The box is in the shape of a polylobed cartouche. It is entirely decorated with a dense repoussé decoration of interlacing flowers and leaves. In the center of the lid, we find a decoration of facing lions.
The background of the decoration is in vermeil.
This may be a box dating from the 18th century, by comparison with snuff boxes dating from this period but in the absence of tughra, it is difficult to be certain on this subject.
The box is hallmarked with a swan, a later French control hallmark for silver.
There is a small hole at the back of the box which allowed a link to be passed through or a bail to be attached.
A very beautiful box typical of Ottoman production.
