From an old American collection. Khorassan, Khurasan (in Persian: خراسان, meaning "land of the rising sun") It is a historical region located mainly in the northeast of present-day Iran.
The Safavids ruled from 1501 to 1722 (with a brief restoration from 1729 to 1736 and from 1750 to 1773) and at their height controlled all of what is now Iran, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Armenia, eastern Georgia, parts of the North Caucasus including Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, as well as parts of Turkey, Syria, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, a vast empire.
## This dynasty, whose reign spanned more than two centuries, led a radical transformation of Persia, including the reorganization of the state, a new architecture of legal powers, and the establishment of Shi'ism as the official religion.
Their reign is often considered the beginning of modern Iranian history, as well as one of the gunpowder empires.
From the evidence available at present, it is certain that the Safavid family was of indigenous Iranian origin, and not of Turkish ancestry as is sometimes claimed. It is likely that the family originated in Persian Kurdistan, and later moved to Azerbaijan, where they adopted the Azeri form of the Turkish spoken there, eventually settling in the small town of Ardabil.
