Horace Vernet (1789-1863) received the Medal of Honor at the Universal Exhibition of 1855, which placed him at the head of the painters of his period. At the time of his death he was the most famous artist in France, a member of thirty academies, admired and imitated throughout Europe and widely known in popular culture. His works are exhibited in museums around the world and a large number decorate the Chateau de Versailles.
