"Neo-gothic Chalice In Solid Silver And Silver-gilt, Hubert Caers, Louvain Around 1900, Dominicans "
Very beautiful neo-Gothic style chalice in solid gilded silver or vermeil in perfect condition. It is quite large and the quality of execution is higher than the average of the time. The vermeil is in perfect condition and covers the entire surface of the chalice. The cup and the knot are engraved with texts in neo-Gothic writing "Iesus" and "hic est sanguinis mei" (chalice seems to be removed). On the embossed silver foot of the chalice, the goldsmith created six medallions in which Christ in majesty and the Holy Virgin on a throne appear, but also several saints whose iconography is not often found on a chalice, such as Saint Rose of Lima with her crown of flowers and Saint Dominic. The presence of these two saints makes me suppose that the other saints represented probably also have a link with the Order of Preaching Fathers or Dominicans. The chalice is still in its original travel case along with its paten and spoon. The three silver pieces weigh 970 grams.
