Maurice Chabas (1862-1947) is a French symbolist painter. A prolific artist, both an easel painter and a monumental painter. He began at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1885, where he exhibited his works until 1913. There he discovered Puvis de Chavanne, who would have a decisive influence on his creations. At the same time, he created monumental decorations for town halls and train stations. Then, a sensitive and mystical artist, he moved, after 1914, towards a stylistic simplification subject to spiritual and cosmic thought, which led to total abstraction circa1920.
