Born on August 23rd 1864 at La Canée, Crete, he had a deep influence on the internal and external affairs of Greece and is credited wiht being «The Creator of Modern Greece.» He was exilded to Paris in 1935 where he passed away at 22 rue Beaujon in Paris 8th on March 18th 1936. This portrait on paper is perhaps the very last of his life, drawn a few weeks before his demise in early 1936.
