After studying at the Lycée Louis le Grand, he became a student at the Académie Julian, then entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Robbe quickly became an accomplished engraver specializing in the aquatint technique. He exhibited regularly in the salons of the Société des artistes français. In 1900, at the Universal Exhibition, his work was awarded the bronze medal, for an engraving entitled L'été (etching in colors). During his life as an artist, Manuel Robbe produced many aquatints, drypoints, etchings and some advertising posters as well as many unique works (oils on canvas, watercolors or pastels). An accomplished sportsman, he was captain of the Beaux-Arts fencing team during the interprofessional championship in Paris in 1912. During the war of 1914-1918, he enlisted in the air force as a pilot and was awarded the Croix de Guerre with citations for his heroic feats of arms.
