D Bourgoin: Rare Solid Silver Snuff Box, Late 18th Century - Revolution.

Silver snuffbox dating from the end of the Ancien Régime, from the Revolutionary period, with a rare and original shape.

The snuffbox is oval, in plain silver. The bottom is very curved to fit the shape of the body in a trouser or jacket pocket.
The opening and the base are highlighted by large triple-threaded moldings.

The inside of the box has a superb thick black patina due to the oxidation of the silver by tobacco.

The snuffbox is hallmarked:
. Letter A in a squared circle: Parisian charge hallmark for the year 1789
. Crowned letter P: jurande hallmark for the year 1789
. Maker's mark: DB with a heart for Denis Bourgoin, registered in 1777. Referenced in 1793. The archives mention a goldsmith of the same name, a snuffbox specialist still active in 1806. This is probably the same person.
. Discharge mark: a fig leaf

The marks indicate a manufacture of 1789, in reality these were used until 1792.

Magnificent snuffbox with this very rare shape for a piece hallmarked with the farmers general. This is a very good quality box, heavy and with thick walls. A real rarity for a snuffbox collection.
