Possibly at Gorki, seated on a transatlantic style long chair in fashion at the turn of the century, we can see him looking onto the horizon towards a future he wishes radiant. Still at this time a philosopher and an ideologue, he has made his mark on history. His intense stare is contrasted by the artist with the lightness of his Impressionnist rendering of the flowers in the garden. A rapid and bold brushtroke details the fold of the clothing, giving place to a more realistic painting of the face which conveys this moment to posterity thanks to the precision in the features.
It is thus a painting in the spirit of the times, strongly marked by the Impressionnist Movement while rendering the sitter faithfully. This pictural style can be related to that of German Impressionnist Max Liebermann. Painted by a first rate artist, this accomplished work should find its honored place in a collection dedicated to the History of Russia, if not in a national museum.
