Successor of Pablo PICASSO in his Montmartre studio, Luigi CORBELLINI (1901-1968) paints here his young son Paul Picasso holding an apple with an expressionist gestural execution in homage to the Blue Period in which his friend PICASSO became legendary. This work is signed and can be dated circa 1931 its subject born in 1921 being about ten years old.
Luigi Corbellini came from Bruges to Paris in 1923 and in 1924 he moved into Picasso's old studio at the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre. When his portraits were in vogue in 1925m he moved to Montparnasse where much of the artistic movement had migrated. We can denote that the stylistic expression used to paint the boy's hands echoes the earlier nines of Picasso's Blue Period. This website presents the Montmartre artistic scene of the Bateau-Lavoir and gives a link to his page : https://www.wikiwand.com/en/articles/Bateau-Lavoir
Here we show a photograph taken by Man Ray showing Picasso with his son Paul. We know that the relationship between Picasso and Corbellini was friendly enough for his son to pose for him. We also show a photograph of Paul Picasso as a high school student where he is a little older. We can also see a much later photograph from 1953, showing Picasso with his two youngest children Claude and Paloma each holding an apple, denoting a tradition of the master for this posing accessory. We also present here a self-portrait of the artist Luigi Corbellini.
