Eugène Jérôme Auguste Roedel (Paris, February 5, 1859 - April 13, 1900) was a French illustrator, poster artist, caricaturist, watercolorist and lithographer, who signed his works "Roedel". During the 1880s, he began to draw and frequent cabarets and balls, especially in the neighborhoods surrounding Butte Montmartre and Place Pigalle. On April 11, 1885, he was one of the first to represent La Goulue. He produced caricatures for newspapers such as Le Petit Illustré, l'Almanach du Père Peinard and, later, Le Courrier français or L'Estampe moderne. He also illustrated piano scores. Roedel met Jules Chéret shortly before 1890 and began producing posters for Imprimerie Chaix. In 1895, he became the official poster artist for the Moulin Rouge. Damaged by absinthe abuse, Roedel died suddenly on April 13, 1900 in the 9th arrondissement of Paris: he was 41 years old.
