Object description :

""the Deer Hunt" Ewer, Engraved Tinned Copper, Uzbekistan, 19th Century, Central Asia"
Superb covered ewer with a spherical body, in tinned copper, from Uzbekistan.
An unusual model, composed of a beautiful S-shaped steel handle, a long neck, a half-sphere lid, and a long pouring spout.
Many subtle engravings cover the entire object and make it a very beautiful ewer.
- The half-sphere lid is placed on a wide rim that receives it.
- The neck ends at its base with a ring. Engravings of interlacing plants enhance them by continuing on the long neck, placed in cartouches.
- On the body and around the pouring spout, a radiant decoration of mandorlas in relief has been reported for each.
- At the base of the pouring spout, a goddess's head
- Along the spout, a beautiful epigraphic decoration;
- The large, bulging body receives a frieze of pendants in the shape of halberds placed in relief in medallions.
One head up, the other head down.
- A Greek key underlines the whole and brings us to very elaborate decorations.
- The belly receives two large hunting scenes of a rider with a saber surrounded by his dogs and hunting deer in a movement of foliage and curves. - A Greek key closes the whole followed by a large frieze of niches.
- A substantial piedouche supports this very delicate ewer.
The engravings on tinned copper are of great finesse.
## A crossing point of the Silk Road for centuries, a former Soviet republic of Central Asia, Uzbekistan offers treasures to those who know how to appreciate them.
The arts and literature, the clothing of the time, the carpets, the silk make this country a joy for collectors of objects of ancient Islam and cities like Samarkand, Bukhara are the magical places of this mythical Silk Road.
This ewer was mainly intended for ablutions, washing the face and hands, at the time of religious ceremonies.
"The feast of the initiates, standing ready to serve, the beauties from all sides hold the ewer in their hands;
the faiths of love wash their hands with all their soul;
while the beauties pour the water, the ewer in their hands"
Reading and translation, AS Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119.

These wonderful tinned coppers were under the Safavid or Kadjar dynasties, and in the other countries around Persia, an eminent alternative to silver and they enjoyed the same status.
