Pastel on 19th century paper, representing a study for an Arab warrior. Very nice posture work, preparatory to a larger painting. Attributed to Gustave Surand (1860-1937), purchased with several other drawings by the same artist. Gustave Surand (1860-1937) is a French painter and sculptor, specializing in orientalism and animal art. A student of Jean-Paul Laurens, he made his debut at the Salon des artistes français in 1881. After a trip to Tunisia in 1884, he devoted himself to the representation of big cats. His major work, Les Lions crucifiés (1889), marked his success. He won a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition and became a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1910. His works are kept in several museums, notably in Bourg-en-Bresse. Good general condition, there is nevertheless some wear on the sheets (especially on the edges) as well as a fold in its center. paper mounted, some swelling on the bottom. Blackened wooden frame.
