Jane Bromley is painted wearing a widow’s peak, a headdress worn during mourning.
She was the heiress of Hallon Manor, subsequently Davenport, and great-grandmother of Henry Davenport III (1677–1731), who married Barbara Ivory (d.1748).
The present painting relates to a composition in Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire (Fox Talbot Museum and Village, National Trust) on loan from the Davenport family since 1993 (as English School, acc. no. 996380).
