Bonifacio Bembo (follower of) Portrait of a man under arcades. Painting on a poplar panel, old restorations (Cabinet Turquin Paris expertise) Bonifacio Bembo (active between 1447 and 1477) was an Italian painter and miniaturist of the early Renaissance who was active in Brescia and Cremona. Born in Brescia he trained in the late Gothic school and was influenced by the Renaissance style. After his meeting with Gemiste Plethon, he was influenced by the latter's Neoplatonic ideals. His paintings include the frescoes in the Church of St. Augustine in Cremona and the portraits of Francesco I Sforza and his wife Bianca Maria Visconti (both dated 1462, visible at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. In 1476 he painted frescoes of the Procession of the Magi and the Annunciation in the College chapel Castiglioni in Pavia. He also painted for the cloister of La Colomba in Cremona. This pair of portraits is very close to the style of La Colomba. Bembo is generally considered the author of one of the famous Visconti-Sforza tarot decks, the symbolism of which reflects Bembo's interest in Neoplatonism. His death is dated 1498 but other sources place it before 1482 (cit. wikipedia.fr) Frame dimensions 46*41
