"Mohammed Lagzouli (born 1937) Morocco 1979"
Born in 1937 in Salé, Mohamed Lagzouli, orphaned very early, worked in various professions: gardener, hairdresser, café owner and then second-hand dealer. He owes his first contact with painting to Jacqueline Brodskis. In 1957, along with Miloud Labied and Hassan El Farrouj, both from Salé, he joined the workshop of the Ministry of Youth and Sports that she ran in Rabat. Jacqueline Brodskis strongly encouraged him to continue painting. He has participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions since 1960. Several of this painter's works are on display at the Musée de l'Art Brut in Lausanne. He lives and works in Salé. Work Lagzouli is an original personality beyond any influence; a phantasmagorical painting, teeming with characters and animals, halfway between the imaginary and the real. With a sense of observation imbued with poetry, he shows the world of the medina, the souks and the artisans. He plays with shapes and colors from the tradition of his environment. The artist evokes the customs and traditions, the festivals and cafes of Salé or the tourists parading through the city's alleys. His scenes of daily life bear witness to a consummate art of composition and a subtle and very mastered palette. gouache on paper signed and dated 1979 lower left dimensions: 65*50 (excluding frame)
