Son of Georges Lepape, a great fashion designer and art deco illustrator, Claude Lepape studied at the Atelier de Bissière, then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, before completing his training at the Art Student League in New York. Exhibiting in particular at the Comparaisons and Peintres Témoins de leur Temps exhibitions and in Parisian galleries, the artist invented the Portrait par l'objet, a pictorial enigma where the everyday object takes on its full depth. The sophisticated and mischievous compositions reveal a surrealist poetry, magnified by the virtuosity of a painter seeking the spirit of things and beings.
