"Parisian Brasseries At Night, By Francis Garat "
Francis Garat (1870 for some, 1853 for others, disappeared in 1914?) is a remarkable artist who has not yet been studied. However, he is famous, both in oil and watercolor, for his views of Paris, full of life and colors. Here, to create this night view, and reinforce the contrasts, he used charcoal, enhanced with spots of light in watercolor and white gouache. The rendering is perfectly mastered and we can clearly perceive the warm atmosphere of the cafes. We can wonder about the place described. For my part, I would lean towards the bottom of the Place Pigalle or famous brasseries that have now disappeared, received a motley crowd of night owls, the abbey of Thelemme and the Rat mort. These places attracted the artists of Montmartre of the time as well as an audience looking for naughty adventures. Colette, among others, was a regular there. The frame, elegant and sober, is entirely original, never opened. The condition is excellent. Signed lower right
