A student of the great Auguin, Castaignet produced landscapes of the Bordeaux region and the nearby Atlantic coast throughout his life, as well as the Dordogne, where he regularly visited. He presented his luminous works in the various salons of Bordeaux but remained an amateur painter. He had an official career as a notary's clerk, leaving him time for his hobby !
Our canvas, painted in 1910, was painted in spring since the main tree was still partially covered with young pale green leaves. The Dropt, a river in the south of the Dordogne, passing through Monpazier and Eymet in particular, flows slowly in front of the painter. It rises at Capdrot in Dordogne and flows into the Garonne at Caudrot a few kilometers after La Réole.
