This exceptional piece, probably dating from the 19th century, demonstrates remarkable expertise in ivory work. Every detail, from the expressive face of Christ to the delicate drapes of the perizonium (purity linen), has been produced with striking precision. The crown of thorns, the suffering features and the dynamic posture of the body reinforce the emotional power of this work. The whole is surmounted by a cartouche bearing the inscription "INRI" (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum), meaning "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews".
