" Manuel Domínguez Sánchez (1840-1906) - The Talker"
- Oil on canvas. - Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, he received a pension in 1864 for his painting "The Resurrection of Jairus' Daughter" (Madrid, Academy of San Fernando), and went to Rome. These early years of his artistic career, faithful to the academic purism learned in Madrid, following the teachings of Federico de Madrazo, but perfected during his stay in Italy, are condensed in one of his most important Roman paintings made at that time, "Margarita before the Mirror". In 1871 he received a first medal for "Seneca, after having opened his veins, enters a bath, and his friends, seized with pain, swear hatred to Nero, who decreed the death of his master", in which the Madrid painter, abandoning his initial purism, allowed himself to be influenced by the new realism learned from Rosales, and included in his argument the interest that this master had reawakened for classical antiquity among Spanish artists. However, the most important volume of his painting was done in collaboration with his great friend Alejandro Ferrant, both specialized in the creation of murals in the Madrid palaces erected during the reign of Alfonso XII, among which that of the Marquis of Linares stands out, and in the decoration of public buildings such as the Ministry of Public Works. Domínguez also participated in the important decoration of the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid, the great artistic project of Spain at that time, as well as in other religious commissions, in which he always demonstrated his interest and predilection for Venetian Baroque painting. He died in this way after finishing the decoration of one of the chapels of the Cathedral of Cuenca. Assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts, he was a member of the Academy of San Fernando since 1900; He had also been a member of the jury of the National Exhibitions with some regularity and president of the Spanish section of the Universal Exhibition of 1889. His extensive work also includes individual and collective portraits and costumbrist and typographic scenes, as well as a prolific and rich work as a watercolorist. - Dimensions of the unframed image: 56 x 44 cm / 74 x 62 cm with old frame. - Galerie Montbaron includes a technical sheet established by a qualified art historian with all its lots.
