Rare and beautiful collective set of Works, the last under the direction of Voltaire in 1775, so-called framed edition. 39/40 Volumes in 8, full glazed tortoiseshell calf, covers framed with triple fillets, smooth spines decorated with gilded iron, titles and volume numbers in red and green morocco, marbled endpapers and edges. A remarkable and neat edition in a superb uniform binding imitating tortoiseshell printed with great care and illustrated, text and figures framed. The white paper as new this beautiful series under the eye of the great philosopher; it does not bear a collection title, but only a volume number indicated on the half-titles. Made after the 4° edition of 1768, the plates are for the most part a reduction of those of the latter, engraved by Martinet and Châtelain, after Gravelot. 74 plates thus composed: frontispiece, 2 portraits of Volaire and Henri IV, One of Louis XIV, 10 figures for the Henriade by Martinet after La Tour, 38 figures for the Theater, 21 plates for the Maid, 2 portraits by Martinet of Charles XII and Pierre-le-Grand
