Born in July 1934 in the Bordeaux region, Michel Charpentier grew up in the tropics, in the West Indies, Gabon and Morocco, his father being a doctor in the French colonies. He completed his primary studies in Bordeaux and Paris. In 1954, he enrolled at the Atelier Charpentier to prepare to enter the École des Métiers d'Art.
He worked as an illustrator for Hachette (publishing house) in relation to a major publication on the History of Civilizations. His illustration work stimulated his interest in different artistic media and he began to experiment with painting, drawing and sculpture.
In 1965, he married and moved to the lush Loire Valley. Life in this beautiful but isolated region allowed the artist to flourish, surrounded by objects that inspired him and the lights that reflected in the mirror of the Loire offering exotic and marine skies.
Michel Charpentier was very touched by the illustrations of the great masters, notably Breugel, Bosch and the Dutch painters of the 15th and 16th centuries. He also admired the works of Miro, Yves Tanguy, Paul Klee and Dali.
His first solo exhibition took place at the Jacques Casanova gallery in Paris in 1974. Since then, Michel Charpentier has exhibited every year at this gallery as well as at the Saint Laumier gallery in Blois.
He describes his works otherwise by saying that they most often represent "window landscapes", an invitation to escape to a lost paradise, or a still life where the subjects try to find another life than the one for which they are destined.
