The study of the nude from life, or 'académie' in French, was particularly important in the training of artists and was also an essential stage in the preparation of classical compositions.
In this particular case, the artist had to study a figure in movement and exertion. To get the model into this particular pose, he had him pull a rope and place his foot on a wedge. This explains the model's pose and allows us to imagine the artist's intention.
What's also interesting about this fine drawing is that you can see the artist's sure and skilful hand, and in particular his ability to truly portray his model. This is not just a simple exercise, but a true life study.
This type of work was not intended to be exhibited, which is why it has been folded in four, leaving its traces, but it is an important part of the artist's work, as close as possible to his creative process.
