"Bursiform Vase With Square Handles Ciboure étienne Vilotte / Thistle Flower"
Bursiform vase with square handles in Ciboure stoneware, Étienne Vilotte period, with rare decoration of thistle flowers, black interior. In very good condition, circa 1930. Height: 17 cm Diameter: 15 cm * In the Basque Country, the wild thistle is called the "Sun Flower" (eguski lore) because it is considered a solar representation and, as such, a favorable symbol. The other popular name for this plant, sorgineko belar (pronounced Sorguineko belar) ("witch's herb"), reminds us that the witch (Sorgin pronounced Sorguin(e)) cannot look the sun in the face. Therefore, the representation of the solar star, the thistle, is likely to protect houses from evil attempts.
