" Tienen (tienen) 1785, Pair Of Candlesticks , Solid Silver, Zilver Candles"
Very rare pair of solid silver candlesticks with the hallmark of the Flemish city of Tienen or Tienen in Dutch. They are in perfect condition. Their four hallmarks are perfectly legible. Two hallmarks of the city of Louvain or Leuven, a university city where the goldsmiths of Diest, Tienen, Jodoigne and Wavre had to take their objects for inspection. The third hallmark is a small pistol, the hallmark of the master goldsmith of Egidius Cornelis junior, who practiced his art in Diest (1761-1771) and then in Tienen (Tirlemont). The collegiate church of Tienen preserves two series of magnificent candlesticks by him. In the trade we mainly find cutlery by him. Shaped pieces like this pair of candlesticks are extremely rare. The fourth hallmark, 85, indicates, as required by the edict of Empress Maria Theresa since 1750, the year of manufacture of the work. This pretty pair weighs a very generous 864 grams.
