This painting dated 1964 and signed in Russian Hebrew dialect is a portrait of Rudolf Nureyeev right after his defection to the West in the year of his visit to Israel. It was painted by a talented artist who was active during the fertile period of the Surrealist Movement. It also contains mystical and religious symbology as well as an inscription engraved on the stone of the throne upon which the highly celebrated dancer is seated. He holds in his hand a flower that is a symbol of eternal life and officiates at the resurrection of a woman awakening from her coffin and touching a droplet of the essence of life in a scene from the netherworld.
Exceptionally well painted, this very large work carries a message with a great symbolic impact. It marks an intense period of world history, of ideological confrontations during the Cold War that overturned destinies. This painting would be an imporant addition to a collection about Russian Dance or dedicated to one of the greatest dancers of all time.
