Given its format and its large dimensions, we can affirm that this icon was originally made to decorate the iconostasis of an Orthodox church and more precisely the so-called "Great Feasts" row. The iconostasis occupies a preponderant place in Orthodox churches: it is a wall separating the sanctuary from the nave and on which very specific icons are arranged, including that of the Trinity which is one of the 12 "Great Feasts" of the Orthodox liturgical calendar.
On this icon, called the Trinity of the Old Testament or the Hospitality of Abraham, we see three angels seated at a table and served by Abraham (lower left) and his wife Sarah (upper left).
This iconographic subject symbolizes the mystery of the Holy Trinity, the triple incarnation of the one God: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. They are inseparable in their essence but appear here separately, represented by three angels.
The icon is painted in tempera in deep and warm tones on a wooden panel.
Very good general state of conservation consistent with its age. Wears of time, small losses and cracks.
