Object description :

"Maurice Orange (attributed A) : "self-portrait Painting The Return Of The Corsairs""
Maurice Henri Orange (1867-1916) (attributed to): “Self-portrait painting The Return of the Corsairs”, oil on canvas 61 X 50 cm, mounted in a very beautiful older gilded frame 73 X 62 cm (minor accidents). Relining, significant repainting certainly too covering and more or less skillful, a chip on the painter's left knee and another on the soldier's crotch on the left. In the absence of a signature perhaps hidden under the overpainting, I can only attribute it to this military artist who gave us many historical paintings, notably on the Empire including "The return of the corsairs in 1806" painted around 1900 which is one of his major works, purchased at the Salon by the State to be deposited at the Granville Museum, it shows us the corsairs loaded with booty and flags taken from the English returning under the cheers of the crowd, some wounded, like the British prisoners who follow them... This studio interior is rich in many details like the paintings that can be seen behind the immense painting placed on the easel or the military accessories placed as models on the armchair.
