Object description :

"Engraved Esponton, 16th Century Style, In Steel And Not Cast Iron."
This espontoon is in the 16th century style, but its manufacture dates from the 19th century. Unlike many 19th century productions, it is not made of cast iron but of forged steel, with a thin socket in sheet steel. The shaft stops 26 cm from the end of the socket.
METAL PART: The point is symmetrical, in the shape of a notched almond, it extends into a small ball, then there are two straight quillons at the end in a small counter-curved ball. (This type of quillons was also found on hunting espontoons).
Each face of the blade is richly decorated with etched motifs, slightly different on one side and the other. From the bottom, we find: two facing dolphins, which suggest a possible relationship with the Dauphin's guards, or with the province of Dauphiné. Then a human face from whose mouth branches of plants emerge, then a flowering of various plant motifs, and finally two faces in profile, opposite, topped towards the front with a long hair lock
. After the quillons, a ring then the metal part ends with a sheet steel socket in which the shaft is adjusted.
NB the nails which secure the shaft and the socket are missing, I chose to leave it as is so that the tip can be easily removed.
SHAFT: it is made of hard wood and stops 26 cm from the edge of the socket

It is a beautiful, very decorative object, at a very reasonable price.
