The flowers occupy almost the entire surface, whether they are in the bouquet or around it. The range of tones goes from dark red to pale pink. The brushstroke is lively and rapid. Nevertheless, the flowers are clearly recognizable, particularly thanks to their characteristic foliage. A beautiful energy emerges from the whole, far from academic bouquets.
The work is signed and dated (1923) at the bottom left. It is in perfect condition. It is placed under glass, in a large art nouveau frame, generally in very good condition. At most, there are a few cracks and minor losses.
This watercolor is the work of Adolphe Rey, a painter who spent his entire life in Isère (France). He first embarked on a military career as an infantry officer. But in 1911 he contracted a serious lung disease and settled in Bourgoin Jailleu. Watercolour was Rey's favourite technique. He painted a great many flowers, but also landscapes of Auvergne (he spent long periods in Murol, in Puy-de-Dôme) and districts of his town. The Lyon Fine Arts Society presented his works in 1939.
