Object description :

"Edouard Debourg (1880-1939) Peonies + Cubist Tulips. Crozant School, Hodé, Cubism"
2 new works by Edouard Debourg from the same provenance, descendants of the painter. - The first is an oil on canvas mounted on oval-shaped cardboard (tondo) representing a bouquet of cubist tulips, signed at the bottom towards the middle + on the back. This is indeed a splendid still life by Debourg, who here paints a bouquet of open tulips in his cubist manner, he effectively treats this bouquet in an extremely modern way, all in a palette of pinks, purples, parma, red, ochre, greens, yellow... This composition can make one think of artists such as Pierre Hodé, Gernez, Lhote... Dimensions without frame 46x55cm In very good condition, recently cleaned, delivered in its period gilded frame Price of this painting alone: €790 The second is a watercolor representing a still life with peonies, signed at the bottom left. So this time Debourg uses watercolor, which he also masters to perfection thanks to a very modern touch, here embellished with a pretty palette of pinks, reds, greens, blues.... Dimensions without frame 33x24cm Also in very good condition, delivered in its original baguette. Price of this watercolor alone: €340 Or €1000 for the 2 works. Emblematic painter of the Crozant school and even more precisely of the Gargilesse group of which he was a part with his friends Anders Osterlind, Marcel Coucy, André Villeboeuf and Claude Chéreau. His work is also very often compared with that of his friends Anders Osterlind and Marcel Coucy. Edouard Bourgeois, known as Debourg, was born in Versailles in 1880 and died in Gargilesse in 1939. He began by attending the Beaux Arts courses in Paris, where he met Emile Othon Friesz, with whom he became friends. This later led him to meet other painters who frequented the Creuse Valley, such as Detroy, Osterlind and Guillaumin. In 1900, he took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, and in 1913 he exhibited at the Salons d'Automne and the Artistes Français until 1938. In 1917, during a trip to Gargilesse and the Creuse Valley, he met the Osterlind clan, with whom he became friends. A few years later, they even became members of the same family through their respective wives. In 1920 he bought a house in La Billardière near Gargilesse where he stayed until the end of his life. From there he rubbed shoulders with all his artist friends mentioned above. In 1921 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and continued to do so until 1938. He worked in Brussels and exhibited with Anders Osterlind at the Manteau gallery. From 1923 he discovered Corrèze where he painted many paintings and drawings, especially in the areas around Uzerche, Argentat, Collonges and Beaulieu. He spent the winter of 1924 in Brittany near Concerneau and decided to go and meet the painters of Pont-Aven and the Académie Ranson. In 1925 he exhibited a lot, especially in Paris, galleries Druet, Granoff, Chappe, etc... In 1931 he exhibited with his friends Belle, Coucy, Detroy, Villeboeuf, Jamet, Joseph, Othon-Friesz... in the hall of the Excelsior on the Champs Elysées for the exhibition "The painters of the Creuse valley". Between 1934 and 1936 he participated in the decoration of the ceiling of the Rex cinema. In 1937 he opened a studio on rue des Sablons in Paris and in 1939 he died in Gargilesse. There will be many post-mortem exhibitions, notably in Orléans and Limoges, and several sales of part of his studio in Orléans. Today he is one of the 10 best painters of the Crozant school
