"Ernest Chevalier (1862-1917) 2 Wild Coastlines, Oléron Island, Brittany Charente La Rochelle"
I offer these 2 rare oils on panels by Ernest Chevalier. - The first represents a wild coastline animated by two characters, a young woman and a fisherman, we can also see a sailboat and a coast in the distance with a church or a lighthouse. It is signed at the bottom right. I have not identified the place, but most likely Charente Maritime or Brittany. The touch is very typical of the artist, powerful, the coloring as usual very subtle. Format of this painting alone 26x35cm, delivered in its original frame, later regilded. Work guaranteed authentic. Price of this painting alone: 790 € -The second represents a rocky coast, it is not signed, only marked on the back "study, E.Chevalier" Same as the first the place is not located, but probably also Brittany or Charente Maritime. Format of this painting alone 25x33cm, also delivered in its regilded period frame This one I cannot guarantee given the lack of signature, but I think that there is no doubt, moreover, they both come from the same place Price of this painting alone: 290€ Or finally 1000€ for both Ernest Esprit Jean Chevalier born in La Rochelle on March 21, 1862, died in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on November 3, 1917. Student of Gervex and Roll. Famous painter of the Navy, therefore renowned for his scenes of ports, beaches, but he also painted landscapes of central France, such as Moret sur Loing... His favorite places will be the island of Oléron, La Rochelle and the entire Charente coast, but also Brittany, Vendée and Normandy. Today he is one of the best painters to have frequented the island of Oléron alongside Lessieux, Boucart, Verger, Pinetti, Parot, Enard, Heiligenstein, etc. He appeared at the universal exhibitions outside competition: Paris, 1900 - Saint-Louis, 1903 - Liège, 1905 - London, 1908 - Buenos Aires, 1910 - Santiago, 1910 - Brussels, 1910 - Rome, 1911. Some titles of the paintings acquired by the State: Port of La Rochelle (Palais de l'Elysée, 1905), Marine (Ministry of Public Education, 1905), Calm Nature (Palais de Justice, 1907), Salt Marshes (Luxembourg Museum, 1909). It is therefore not surprising that the Department of the Navy secured, in 1908, the services of such a painter of the sea and seafarers. He was decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1913. His friends: Erik Satie, Jacques-Emile Blanche who frequented the studio on rue Caulaincourt; then in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Signac, Toulouse-Lautrec, Cézanne.
