Charles d'AGUERREGARAY (Bayonne 1859– Biarritz 1936) "Les Aldudes” Watercolour signed lower right L: 35 cm x H: 24.5 cm Beautiful frame under glass (Atelier Le Chat Rouge in Pau) Charles d'Aguerregaray was a landscape painter, who notably depicted the Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Nicknamed "the grocer" because he was a tradesman, he was a student of Achille Zo between 1870 and 1875 at the Municipal School of Drawing and Painting in Bayonne. In 1892, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Français. In 1899, he became a member of the association "Biarritz-Association" as "Artiste-Peintre de Biarritz". From 1901, and until the end of his life, he regularly participated in exhibitions including: 1901: exhibition of Biarritz-Association. He presented five oils: Marine, La Côte des Basques, Vague, Coucher de soleil, Attelages des bœufs. He was described as "a young but ambitious painter who wanted to go far". 1903: in Bayonne, he presented Vagues à Biarritz, Entrée du port de Pasajes at the first exhibition of the Société des Amis des Arts Bayonne-Biarritz. 1904: in Biarritz, he exhibited La Vague at the exhibition of the Société des Amis des Arts Bayonne-Biarritz at the Grand Hôtel de Biarritz. He was also the secretary of the exhibition. He was described as: "the great Biarritz artist Aguerregaray". 1913: he exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Amis des Arts Bayonne-Biarritz at the Palais Bellevue in Biarritz, where he presented the watercolors: Le Port de Pasajes, Le Vieux Saint-Sébastien, Un coin du lac de Chiberta and Vue à Biarritz. 1924: he participated with Saint-Jean-de-Luz in the Salon of French Artists in Paris. 1926 and 1927: Paris, Salon of French Artists 1935: he exhibited several paintings at the Salon of Bayonnais Artists. Charles d'Aguerregaray died in Biarritz in 1936.
