Francis Coates Jones, a leading figure of the American school of painting
Francis Coates Jones, an ambitious young man from a wealthy family in Baltimore, travels to Europe, he goes to France then to Italy where he perfects his polished style and his luminous touch. On his return to his homeland, he is then asked for many official commissions. Here he delivers a painting of great finesse, as evidenced by the small details such as the small still life with oranges and grapes on the bench.
Francis Coates Jones, passionate about Greek and Roman antiquity
Francis Coates Jones enjoys depicting female characters dressed in antique style evolving within idyllic landscapes. A theme, inspired by his trip to the old continent which lastingly inspired his artistic production. In our painting, two musicians with zither and tambourine in hand converse on a stone bench in a green setting. The city of Pompeii stretches out behind her.
