Wonderful Kashan rug hand-knotted in kork wool circa 1960-1970 in very good used condition.
It measures 136 cm wide by 205 cm long for a density of around 360,000 knots per m2.
The central medallion, placed next to two large halberd-shaped pendants, depicts a large stylized flower in bloom, surrounded by many other flowers covering the field. The border composed of varied patterns, palmettes and alternating branches is inspired by old models from Herat.
The whole of this piece is in good condition, the velvet clean, the edges impeccable as well as the short fringes.
The general condition is very good, there is no reduction in pile, the fine wool used is of first quality and the colors are fresh.
The colors are fresh without loss of shade and not insolated. Kashan (Kachan, Keshan): large city in the center of Iran.
At the time of the Persian renaissance, Kashan was the center of production of carpets of legendary splendor.
Carpets with fine weaving, of a very rich composition, were knotted by the royal factory of Shah Abbas.
They have become the centerpieces of museums and private collections.
Craftsmanship was interrupted in Kashan between the invasion of the Afghans (1722) and the end of the 19th century.
The revival of carpet production began with carpets that are distinguished by the superior quality of the wool giving an extremely velvety appearance. These examples are called Kashan Motashemi, named after the most famous master weaver of the late 19th century.
The decorations are varied and offer a meticulous craftsmanship: hunting scenes, subjects with figures inspired by Persian mythology, birds in a plant decor, trees of life. Thanks to the superior quality of the wool, their dense knotting, the beauty of their natural colors and their fine designs, the Kashan took their place among the best Persian carpets.
