He studied with Robert Knorr at the School of Fine Arts in Stuttgart.
In 1920, he undertook a study trip to Italy. It is there that he discovers the Etruscan and Egyptian sculptures which he will later take as inspiration for his work.
In 1924, he opened a workshop in Stuttgart. As a sculptor, he preferred the technique of casting cement.
In 1929 he co-founded the 1929 Stuttgart group. In the same year he became a member of the German Artists' Association.
