"Albert Gouget (1856-1948) Return Of The Herd To The Camargue. Bouches Du Rhône, Arles, Doigneau"
Important and superb pastel by Albert Gouget representing a shepherd leading his flock in the Camargue, signed lower right. Format of the pastel at sight 38x60cm and 56x78cm including frame. This is therefore a magnificent and large pastel by Albert Gouget who paints here one of his favorite subjects, the rural world in the Camargue, towards the mouth of the Rhône. We can see a shepherd with his dog and his sheep as well as two bulls near a typical Camargue construction, on the left cypresses and in the distance the mountain. Magnificent achievement where the artist skillfully plays with chalk, cold colors (blue, purple or green) rub shoulders with warm colors (orange, brown ...) We know little about Albert GOUGET, if not that the painter, born in 1856 in Ismaïlia in Egypt and died in 1948 in Neuilly-sur-seine, and that he lived for many years in Marseille. A recognized specialist of his time in pastel technique, he produced some color lithographs. Exhibiting regularly in Paris, and in the large cities of the south of France, he first offered landscapes of Provence, with a predilection for the Camargue. But we know that he also painted the coasts of Brittany and Normandy, but also the Beauceron countryside. Reading the press of the time, we can guess that he was close to the Action Française, a nationalist and royalist political movement of the extreme right, and very involved in patriotic action. Pastel in very good condition, delivered framed in a modern baguette. Obviously even more successful in reality than in the photo, because the reflections of the glass prevent good representative photos. Work guaranteed authentic
